what if
there were only
two kinds
of people
the people with the glass half full
or the half empty glasses?
what if
the world were separated
exactly in half
and the naysayers, regressives and "no-ers" were
bundled together
melded into a gray morass
and the other folks kept on without any caution
toward their progressive ways?

acorns in piles
a dry
summer
a thirsty autumn
leaves curling too early
birds scatter gathering berries from
the old dogwood tree
bent with time, disease and drought
sad and beautiful
dying, not death.

a bird blown off course
she lit in the sassafras tree,
golden brown
as the leaves surrounding her;
is she warbler, sparrow or other unknown
to me winged creatures
here only for seconds to my eye.

a turkey struts
all things are interesting
most are beautiful
we often pass by
pass on
fail to see
have a different view
inward when we need to be outward
looking and not seeing
forgetting to notice 50 colors of green
the white clouds floating in the blue sky
overhead of trees several hundred years old
and yet,
a turkey strolls by
on his or her way to do what comes naturally
looking for food, searching for the flock
or starting the whole fowl season over again
and the day goes just a bit better
and a bit better is all that's needed.

emotional response
often,
children do not call home
and siblings do not
write letters
old acquaintances up
and die
without contacting
so guilt is high
wondering
if staying in touch was whose job?
tears
start
rolling down cheeks now wrinkled from
years in the sun
oo often
and too much
and eyes are dimmed and
entranced by color so bright
it is easily seen
with old irises.
and yet, when the moments turn bitter,
sour, perplexing or confusing
the dog, she is there
giving a kiss
whimpering in echo
reaching out with
her voice
to comfort
to reassure
and to guide
among the trials of life
and defend the heart.

spying
today I did something
new
not the usual
in my experience
visiting a person's facebook page
seems like it should occur
with an invitation
and
it is able to be viewed
without permission
so I did.
I got to see someone I love
without their knowledge.
What is my spying about; I am not sure.
These moments navigating this site
were such a bright spot in my day
and
my heart.

headache
the pain
and ache
of a migraine
is not a brite spot.
a mate and a companion who stay
by
and hand you tablets
to reduce the
suffering
and the pain continues
love prevails.

a dog
she is by my foot
on the hard floor
will not use her pillow
because it is not near me.
She watches as I cook dinner and
is always interested and always hungry
and always grateful for her
daily bread.
May I remember the lessons she
teaches me about love and loyalty!
And food.

sleep
lusting
for fall temperatures
and family times
tripping from town
to pursue
a dream
twenty four hours
with a
grand
child.

autumn begins
the gentle breeze
in the oaks, sweet gums
and crepe myrtles
shakes leaves and
blossoms loose
blowing them to the ground
as humans and dogs are
able
once again
to hang out
outside
with the cardinals, doves
and the greater finch!

post birthday day

why is the day after
not as important as the day?
why do we move on and forget
to
call our loved ones?
Or, maybe, telling them on that
day is important.
We remember each other.
Fondly, with cards and gifts and with
hugs and hopefully, with good thoughts
as we circle back to our own selves.
maybe, every once in a year may be
too much to expect even more?

oh my gosh!
today, we played
not in the sand
not in the mountains
or indoors or outdoors
or anywhere physical
or mineral
we played god(s)
and
believe
hope
wait
to see if it works!

old pains
revisited
by wandering through a long ago
neighborhood
differences
and abundant similarities
still rental properties galore
majestic oaks towering above
human built dwellings laughing
and I found an old friend
my neighbor who loved me when
I was so down
I was out.
My heart was warm as I thought of her
many kindnesses to me.
Some things are free.

one of those people
yes, I am.
It has been hard to admit considering
my farm background
where animals could not be pets because
they were food or sold for others' food or
to keep the winter's chill away from the
floor by buying coal
and yet here I am
a century later
in admiration
to proclaim
I have a dog and
she has me and it is a wondrous thing.
Tonight, I was juggling several dishes for dinner and
forgot one of them
she was at the ready immediately
putting her nose to the stove
even
even
before I smelled anything.
I wonder if we made ourselves more like the animals
wer are and paid more attention
to them if they would show us
how to save our planet,
find a cure for heart disease and AIDS
and be advised when weather becomes
unpredictable and how and when to
take shelter.
Are we dumb or what?

resetting goals for a new blog
Having kept to my original goal of blogging for a year; now, I would like to
emphasize special topics in "brite spot".
Those of us who are owned by a dog are walking among the angels.
When a family member pulls away and does not give a hug;
my dog will.
My dog does not care how I saw something. She is usually attuned to my
"tone" and my attitude.
Wherever I go, whether I take her or not, she's waiting for me to return.
She is a true and loyal family member.
I love you Sue.
